Art initiative VHDG from Leeuwarden organised, under the title HEAPSTEAPS, a series of projects in public. The Frisian word ‘heapsteaps’ means as much as ‘unexpected, suddenly’. VHDG has asked different artists to go to ground with their work and pop up at unexpected places.
 

Machiel Braaksma took things from everyday life, mounted them again and created new situations with his figures that were hilarious, moving, confusing, relativising or commentating. For HEAPSTEAPS he turned up with a ‘moving’ collection.
 

On both front doors of a mat black, intimidatingly big American tub Braaksma has put on a specially designed logo with the text ‘Weest bevlogen’ (Be inspired). The logo transforms the car but more importantly still: the car and the logo evoke the seemingly innocent call for speed and actuality in 2008. Vehicle and logo together suddenly speak the language of the time. Braaksma infiltrates the current hasty manner of communication and gives plenty of opposition by turning up with a counterpart which urges you to reflect.
 

From 3rd to 10th April 2008 the artist will be driving through the centre of Leeuwarden with his moving collection. On the Kunstvlaai A.P.I. he will present a film of these journeys that he has made. During the opening on 10th May the vehicle and driver will be standing by and alert at the entrance of the ‘Gashouder’ on the grounds of the ‘Westergasfabriek’.
 

‘Weest bevlogen’ is innocent, apparently careless, lightly ironic, almost comic, confusing and commentating. The city, visitors of manifestations and the rest of the public appear to be part of a living collage.
 

The emblem WEEST BEVLOGEN appears in a once off limited publication of 200 pieces for the price of € 10,-.
